Mission
Intersim promotes practical and viable standards for interoperability among simulators, simulation systems, supporting software, and related technologies.
Effective interoperability allows independently developed systems to exchange useful information, coordinate their operation, and participate in common simulated environments without requiring every system to be redesigned around a single proprietary architecture.
- Practical interoperability
- Viable implementations
- Open interfaces
- Reusable standards
Interoperability
Interoperability works best when specifications describe clear interfaces and useful behavior without unnecessarily constraining implementation.
Common Interfaces
Define understandable interfaces through which independently developed simulation systems can communicate.
Information Exchange
Establish useful and predictable mechanisms for exchanging state, events, timing, and other simulation information.
Practical Implementation
Favor approaches that can actually be implemented, tested, maintained, and deployed using real systems.
Independent Systems
Enable systems created by different developers, organizations, and technologies to participate together.
Standards
Practical
A useful interoperability standard should solve an identifiable problem and should be straightforward enough to implement in actual simulation systems.
Viable
A viable standard should accommodate different architectures and technologies, remain useful over time, and provide enough benefit to justify implementation by independent developers.
Open
Interfaces should be sufficiently documented that independent implementations can interoperate without dependence upon a single proprietary implementation.
Extensible
Specifications should allow systems to evolve while preserving useful compatibility between implementations.
About Intersim
Intersim.com is concerned primarily with the practical problems involved in making simulation systems work together.
The objective is not interoperability for its own sake, but useful interoperability: approaches that can be implemented with reasonable effort, applied to real systems, and retained as those systems evolve.
Intersim also operates and supports selected Internet and distributed-network infrastructure. These projects are ancillary to Intersim's principal simulator-interoperability mission.
